The Problem

THE PROBLEM

Homelessness is Significant,
Growing and Costly

  • Nationally, approximately 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year.

  • Although the chronically homeless make up approximately 10% of the total homeless population, they consume 50% of available resources.

  • Before placement in supportive housing, homeless people with serious mental illnesses averaged $40, 451 per person in services each year. Placement in supportive housing reduced yearly services by $16,281 per person. (Culhane Study, 2002)

  • A homeless prevention measure is easier on the individual, their families and the community. We can stem the tide by educating the vulnerable about resources available in the community - before they fall into the homeless population.
